We Are A Generation Empowered

From AGE Founder Bess Byers' blog...

Maya Angelo once said, “What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing is change it.”

What if the problem is engrained in politics? What if this problem will take years to solve? What if Americans simply don’t know the problem exists? You start a movement.

I created A Generation Empowered to educate, and advocate for Americans on the trillions in national debt. I’m just one girl who loves her country, and I’m concerned when I see both parties massively increasing our debt.

Since 2010 I’ve expressed concern about the mounting national debt. Fast forward four years and a few trillion, my fears continue to grow. The path we’re on is not sustainable.

The U.S. national debt is $18 trillion, and increases over $1 trillion a year. Social Security will be empty in 19 years. Our national debt will hit at least $22 trillion in ten years. Interest on the debt eats away at our budget.

Where is the outrage? Who will pay for this? Unfortunately we do. The government must eventually raise taxes, therefore lower our incomes, to pay for their financial fiasco. Lower income results in more government assistance, which further increases our debt. It’s a vicious cycle.

Millennials, we can’t selfie our way out of this mess. We’re past the point of no return. The sooner we address the debt crisis, the less it will negatively impact our future.

Social Security needs reform. Stop funding endless wars. Does the government really need 80 different means tested welfare programs? Cut the billions in wasteful spending, and for the love of God, stop bailouts for fat cat campaign donors.

“Bess, the problem is too big to tackle. I can’t do anything.”

Our apathetic attitude only perpetuates the problem. If Millennials voted, we would comprise 40 percent of the vote. We have the power to change politics. We are the future of politics.

We’re also the instant gratification generation, and the national debt crisis won’t disappear overnight. This problem is a marathon, not a sprint, and I’m ready to run.

If you agree $18 trillion in debt is unacceptable and unpatriotic, join me. Visit A Generation Empowered. Click “I Agree.” Just sign up for my email list. I promise to represent your voice, and voices have strength in numbers.

I can’t do this alone, so help me make our generation, a generation empowered.

Leaving a generation almost $20 trillion in debt is unacceptable and unpatriotic.
